The Logic of Place, curated by Maria Hinel, brings together works by Shawanda Corbett, Pam Glick, Naotaka Hiro, Emily Kraus, and Brie Ruais. The exhibition examines the interaction between the artist's body and their chosen materials, viewing this as a reciprocal exchange. Rather than seeing the non-human world as inert, the presented works position materials as active participants in the creative process. The textures of canvas or clay engage with the body, reacting to its movements and hesitations.
The exhibition explores how specific methods of mark-making emerge, influenced by predetermined gestures, material weight, or body-orientation mechanisms. This process is dialogic, where each action prompts a material response that shapes subsequent steps. Form develops organically through the process itself, rather than from a pre-conceived image. The artists demonstrate an awareness of the connections between bodies and objects, creating a "relational place" through their encounter. The exhibition's title draws from philosopher Kitarō Nishida's concept of 'place' (basho), which posits a worldview where bodies are embedded within a field of co-determining relations.
