giovanni bosco dottore di tutto #3
Christian Berst Art Brut presents giovanni bosco dottore di tutto #3, a third monographic exhibition dedicated to Giovanni Bosco (1948-2009), a key figure in Sicilian art brut. The exhibition features approximately a dozen previously unseen works, showcasing the artist's vibrant vocabulary of hearts, robots, and blades. Bosco, originally a shepherd, rose to prominence as a major artist despite adversity, with his works now held in numerous collections and institutions.
Born in Sicily in 1948, Giovanni Bosco's life took a difficult turn after the murder of his brothers by the mafia, leading to institutionalization and a prison sentence. Nevertheless, he maintained a disarming smile and transformed his impoverished existence into pure poetry. In Castellamare del Golfo, near Palermo, his days were marked by Neapolitan folk songs and rare inventive paintings created on city walls or found materials. His genius, though recognized late, was cut short by cancer in 2009. The exhibition highlights the unique and profound nature of his visual language, which appears indebted to no external influences, stemming solely from the intricate depths of his psyche.
